Call for Papers
Usage of Service Level Agreements in Grids Workshop
Austin, Texas, USA, September 19, 2007
http://www.coregrid.net/sla-workshop2007/
to be held in conjunction with
The 8th IEEE International Conference on Grid Computing (Grid 2007)
Austin, Texas, USA, September 19 ? 21, 2007
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DESCRIPTION
As the Grid evolves to become an infrastructure for providing and consuming
services in research and commercial environments, mechanisms are needed to agree
on the objectives and the quality of such service provision. This could be
facilitated by means of electronic contracts between service consumers and one
or more service providers, in order to achieve the necessary reliability and
commitment on both sides. Such contracts help to establish a well-defined
relationship between a service provider and a client in the context of a
particular service provision. This is especially important if the services
or resources to be used come from different administrative domains,
or if commercial service provision needs to be supported. Service Level
Agreements (SLAs) are a promising approach to establishing these kinds of
guarantees and relationships. This workshop will provide a forum to present
current research and up-to-date solutions from research and business communities.
TOPICS OF INTEREST
Topics of interest for the Usage of Service Level Agreement in Grids workshop
include but are not limited to:
* Areas benefiting from SLAs
* Languages to express SLAs (e.g. SLOs, BLOs, QoS, Guarantees, Penalties)
* Protocols to conclude and negotiate SLAs
* Technologies for management and observation of SLAs
* Static vs. Dynamic SLAs
* Business models & Grid economy
* Validation techniques for SLA parameters
* Comparison and matchmaking of SLA and policy descriptions
* Managing user expectations via SLAs
* Multi-party SLAs and SLA chaining
* SLA-based resource discovery, co-scheduling and resource reservation
* Registry Services and repositories for SLA
* SLA-based trust management including VOs

Subject: [GRAAP-WG] telecon on 3/14
Message-ID: <45F790D5.8070309@hp.com>
All,
We're scheduled for our next telecon on March 14. The US has changed to daylight savings time, but for this first meeting I will strive to keep the times the same in other countries. Therefore, the times in the US will be one hour later, and I hope that means that the time will be the usual outside the US. The times are as follows:
10:00AM Central Standard Time US (GMT-0500)
which should be:
11:00AM Eastern Standard Time US
1600 Germany(?)
0000 Japan
ALSO, the dial-in numbers have seemingly changed again. You should now use:
Toll number: 8324452343
Toll free number: 8664809967
Conference code: 8578310
And, finally, after all of the confusion, the good news. I believe I have the final draft of WS-Agreement. It can be found at:
http://forge.gridforum.org/sf/docman/do/downloadDocument/projects.graap-wg/docman.root.current_drafts/doc6091/37
(sorry for the long URL). If we have no complaints during this telecon, I'll submit it right afterward.
Best,
--- Jim

One nit...
The grouping in the psuedo-schema for the Terms document in Section
4.2.2 seems a little off to me, i.e. not expressing the actual syntax
from the schema in the appendix which I think accurately captures what
we've always been doing.
With the current nesting and normal regular expression precedence, it
says that the outermost wsag:All can contain exactly one of the
compositors OR a sequence of basic terms, rather than a sequence of
compositors and or basic terms. I think the opening brace should move
"up" to include the sequence of compositor children within the same
choice block that is already getting repeated with the "*" operator,
but the operator needs to be changed to "+" for one-or-more semantics:
{
wsag:TermCompositorType
|
wsag:TermCompositorType
|
wsag:TermCompositorType
|
wsag:ServiceDescriptionTermType
|
wsag:ServiceReferenceType
|
wsag:ServicePropertiesType
|
wsag:GuaranteeTermType
} +
This corresponds exactly to the
(defaulting to minOccurs=1) that is in the schema.

I have to point out that my name was misspelled in the current document

All,
It's not clear to me whether the group has agreed to
re-submit the WS-Agreement document to the editor pipeline
(a necessary step before the specification can be
published).
To avoid any confusion, could one of the chairs
please unambiguously announce the start of one-week
working group last call on the list?
And when that is complete, notify Greg Newby, Ramin Yahyapour
and myself?
The tracker in the editor pipeline for the WS-Agreement
specification is:

Dear Stephen,
yes, the group agreed during the working group meeting
at OGF19 in Chapel Hill to resubmit the WS-Agreement
document to the editor. The protocol says that we
would post the last call early February. However,
there was some delay in incorporating and double
checking of the last changes. Now the final version
is ready since last week an we are ready to post the
last call to the group.
Best regards
Wolfgang

Dear Tianchao,
the latest version differs only by a small number of
changes (resulting from the public comments) compared
to the previous version. Additionally - as discussed at
OGF19 - a general WS-Agreement fault has been included
as described in the text of the spec already.
All changes are described in the slides we presented
at OGF 19. All wsdl and schema code has been verified
by Jim and Oliver before adding them to the spec.
Thus I think it should be feasible to check the updates
within one week.
Best regards
Wolfgang

I'm working on it and it seems one week is enough. However, I should
point out that the review is really necessary, even if the schemas and
wsdls have been grammatically verified. A quick look at the schema and
WSDLs has revealed a problem with the current version posted on the web,
which was already addressed in Comment# 14.
The following definition should be removed from Agreement wsdl and
agreement types schema accordingly.
I understand the above definition is taken from the WSDLs and schemas I
posted. However, at that time I was not sure if the
AgreementServiceReference is really duplicate and I did not remove them.
Instead, I simply modified AgreementServiceReferenceList to
ref="wsag:AgreementServiceReference" minOccurs="0" maxOccurs="unbounded"
to address another issue (Comment #12). Since the result of discussion
confirms that they are duplicate, the above definition should be removed
from Agreement wsdl and agreement types schema too.
I'm not sure if I should create a new comment.
Best regards,
Tianchao Li

Hello,
here is a list of the issues that I discovered in the final draft.
Best regards,
Tianchao Li
1. IMPORTANT (Agreement.wsdl) The following part should be removed from
Agreement.wsdl
and the following be removed from agreement_types.xsd
AgreementServiceReference was already identified to be duplicate and
should be removed. (Comment#14 of last year)
2. IMPORTANT The definition and usage of faults is different for
AgreementFactory and PendingAgreementFactory. It seems that the
PendingAgreementFactory has not been updated to catch up with the fault
definition changes in AgreementFactory.
3. MINOR (Agreement.wsdl and AgreementFactory.wsdl) Unnecessary soap
namespace definition for soap and wsa in WSDL
xmlns:soap="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/wsdl/soap/" (no reference to
soap)
xmlns:wsa="http://www.w3.org/2005/08/addressing" (all reference are
in type definition, it is enough to define it in the schema element)
4. MINOR (agreement_types.xsd) Several element definition use separate
closing element tag. This is inconsistent with the style of other
element definitions. These include the following:

Hi.
I found another issue in the most recent document:
The white space after in "ServiceConsumer " needs to be deleted.

Dear all,
I modified the version 40 of the spec according to the
comments of Tianchao & Dominic. The new version 41 can be
found here:
https://forge.gridforum.org/sf/docman/do/downloadDocument/projects.graap-wg/docman.root.current_drafts/doc6091/41
I removed all tags of the previous change tracking thus
only the last changes are tracked.
Tianchao & Dominic: Please verify that everything is correct.
Jim & Oliver: Please verify the final code in your respective environment.
After the telco tomorrow we should then inform the two area chairs
and Greg Newby and upload the final version to the editor's pipeline.
Best regards
Wolfgang

It is fixed.
(new and minor) 6. Currently Agreement.wsdl, AgreementFactory.wsdl has
the following comment before GetResourceProperty operations.
To improve consistency and clarity, this comment should be applied to
AgreementState.wsdl, PendingAgreementFactory.wsdl before the following

I am a bit confused: in the version I uploaded the comment
was already in
PendingAgreementFactory.wsdl
AgreementState.wsdl
but not in
AgreementFactory.wsdl
Agreement.wsdl
I have added to these two.
I suppose this is what you intended.
The updated version (including also the other changes you suggested)
is here:

The change tracking again reduced to the last changes.

Message-ID: <4609F91E.5020201@hp.com>
All,
We're scheduled for our next telecon on March 28. The US has changed to daylight savings time, and we agreed last time to shift one hour earlier outside the US, so we go back to the original times in the US, and other areas should be one hour earlier. My best calculation is that he times are as follows, but the US central time is the benchmark to convert from should I be incorrect:
9:00AM Central Standard Time US (GMT-0500)
which should be:
10:00AM Eastern Standard Time US
1600 Germany
2300 Japan
The current dialin numbers are:
Toll number: 8324452343
Toll free number: 8664809967
Conference code: 8578310
Please see Wolfgang's recent message for the current status of the document, and last steps prior to submitting to the editor.
Best,
--- Jim

Toshi pointed out that there was a change of the font
in the acknowledgement section and suggested to add three
contributors to the list, that were contributing during
the public comment phase.

Subject: [GRAAP-WG] Issues in the final draft

Message-ID: <000f01c7711e$f9083250$51851a81@gelbwurz>
Unfortunatly there are still some issues on the final draft, since we need
to keep the text consistent with the changes in the wsdl. I made a list of
corrections for this issue.
1. the Section 9.4.6 Resource Property wsag:AgreementServiceReferenceList
should be removed, since this was removed from the wsdl
2. the pseudo code in section 9.5.1 should now look like:
wsag:AgreementStateDefinition
*
3. the description of the pseudo code has to be adopted
/wsag:AgreementState
The agreement state type has open content so that additional
domain-specific state information can be expressed.
/wsag:AgreementState/wsag:State
The agreement state must be one of the following values: Pending,
PendingAndTerminating, Observed, ObservedAndTerminating, Rejected,
Complete or Terminated. The individual states are as described in
Section 7.1.
4. the title of section 9.5.2 should be renamed to Resource Property
wsag:ServiceTermState
5. the pseudo code in section 9.5.2 should now look like:
wsag:ServiceTermStateDefinition
*
?
*
?
*
*
6. the description of the pseudo code has to be adopted
/wsag:ServiceTermState
List of service states indexed by name.
/wsag:ServiceTermState/@termName
Name of the term to which it refers.
/wsag:ServiceTermState/wsag:State
The state of a service term. The state can be NotReady, Ready or
Completed.
/wsag:ServiceTermState/wsag:Processing
Substate of Processing.
/wsag:ServiceTermState/wsag:Idle
Substate of Idle.
7. the title of section 9.5.3 should be renamed to Resource Property
wsag:GuaranteeTermState
8. the pseudo code in section 9.5.3 should now look like:
wsag:GuaranteeTermStateDefinition
*
?
*
?
*
*
9. the description of the pseudo code has to be adopted
/wsag:GuaranteeTermState
List of guarantee states indexed by name.
/wsag:GuaranteeTermState/@termName
Name of the term to which it refers.
/wsag:GuaranteeTermState/wsag:State
The state of the guarantee. This can be NotDetermined, Fulfilled or
Violated

Dear Jim,
due to a train delay I am still in a train instead in
my office. The internet connection is too bad for
a telco thus I won't be able to attend today.
I incorporated the changes to the pseudo code
suggested by Oliver but I couldn't upload the
new version yet - keep on trying.

Hi,
- In section 9.5.1 the following has to be removed:
/wsag:AgreementState/wsag:Pending
An agreement state which is in state Pending.
/wsag:AgreementState/wsag:PendingAndTerminating
An agreement state which is in state PendingAndTerminating.
/wsag:AgreementState/wsag:Observed
An agreement state which is in state Observed.
/wsag:AgreementState/wsag:ObservedAndTerminating
An agreement state which is in state ObservedAndTerminating.
/wsag:AgreementState/wsag:Rejected
An agreement state which is in state Rejected
/wsag:AgreementState/wsag:Complete
An agreement state which is in state Complete
/wsag:AgreementState/wsag:Terminated
An agreement state which is in state Terminated
The state of the agreement is now determined by the value of the
/wsag:AgreementState/wsag:State element. The above mentioned elements should
be removed.
- In section 9.5.2 the description of the pseudo code is in the same box
(grey background) as the pseudo code.

Hi Oliver,
thanks, I fixed these two.
The last version (46) is here
https://forge.gridforum.org/sf/docman/do/downloadDocument/projects.graap-wg/docman.root.current_drafts/doc6091/46
(in 45 I didn't update the table of contents)
Sorry for the many incremental changes, but I want to
finalise the spec today and prepare for sending to
the editor pipeline.
Best regards

Hi:
I corrected some problems with ver46.
Unfortunately I cannot seem to upload as doc6091/47
so it is uploaded as
https://forge.gridforum.org/sf/go/doc14363?nav=1
Wolfgang or Jim: Could you please move the above to doc6091/47 and also clean up
https://forge.gridforum.org/sf/docman/do/listDocuments/projects.graap-wg/docman.root.current_drafts
(ie delete doc14361 and doc14362)..

Hi: I had missed correcting one error. So I've had to update again.
Since the create button only appears for me in the current drafts and not in the subfolders.
I've had to create another doc.

Hi. on GGF18, there had been a discussion for primers.
Unfortnately not much has been done in that area.
As a starter, I've uploaded a PPT file which contains parts of material
which Heiko and I used
as a WS-Agreement Tutorial.
Please find it on
http://forge.gridforum.org/sf/go/doc14366?nav=1
BTW can someone please tell me how I can upload a new version of this PPT
and create a
version2 rather than create a new doc?
Currently I can only find the Create button at.
http://forge.gridforum.org/sf/docman/do/listDocuments/projects.graap-wg/docm
an.root.tutorials
If I move to

Hi,
I realized the pseudo code in section 9.5.2 was not correct. Here is the corrected version.
wsag:ServiceTermStateDefinition
{
|
|
} ?
*
According to the agreement_state_types.xsd the pseudo code for the GuaranteeTermStates would look very similar to the ServiceTermStates. I agree with Toshi that the processing/idle sub states do not make much sense for GuaranteeTermStates. However, the service name attribute should be in the GuaranteeTermState, since this is required to determine to which guarantee term this state refers. Also the any-element (open content) is optional.
wsag:GuaranteeTermStateDefinition
?
*
We could also change the agreement_state_types.xsd, so that processing/idle sub states are not allowed for the GuaranteeTermState type. (minor change)
Regards,
Oliver

Hi,
I attached the updated agreements_state_types.xsd. I simply moved the
from TermStateType to ServiceTermStateType and added a new element
to GuaranteeTermStateType. I hope now everything is consistent.
In the pseudo code the open content should be optional. You are right, this should also be changed for AgreementState.
Regards,
Oliver
