Group Summary:
The performance of most grid applications is dependent on the performance of the networks forming the grid. The Network Measurements Working Group (NMWG) identifies network metrics (aka characteristics) useful to grid applications and middleware, and develops standard mechanisms to describe and publish these characteristics to the Grid.
Charter Focus/Purpose and Scope:
Goals/Deliverables:
Title: A Hierarchy of Network Performance Characteristics for Grid Applications and Services
Abstract: GFD-R-P.023
This document describes a standard set of network characteristics that are useful for Grid applications and services as well as a classification hierarchy for these characteristics. The goal of this work is to identify the various types of network measurements according to the network characteristic they measure and the network entity on which they are taken. This document defines standard terminology to describe those measurements, but it does not attempt to define new standard measurement methodologies or attempt to define the best measurement methodologies to use for grid applications, however it does attempt to point out the advantages and disadvantages of different measurement methodologies.

Title: Network Measurement Schemata v2.0
Abstract: Description: This deliverable will document NM-WG's version 2 schemas, and gather together comments on the sample software implementations (developed by group members) that will use them. It is hoped that after responding to the user and public comments (perhaps by further modifying the schemas) that the experimental document can be used as a basis for developing a full recommendation.
Adoption Level: To be implemented by DANTE, ESNet and Internet2 in the first instance
Dependent Specifications: NA
Grid Role: Informs app and m/ware design. Recommendations hopefully adopted by network operators.

Title: Network Measurement Use Cases
Abstract: Complementing other NM-WG work and use case deliverables produced elsewhere in GGF, this document will identify and analyse ways in which network monitoring can be applied in the Grid domain. It is assumed that the use cases will have some relevance to the NM-WG schemas, although that not need be the case. Further, the use cases can be network/Grid operations or middleware focused. Long timescales exist due to a lack of additional effort to produce this document.

Title: Network Measurement Request and Publication Schemas v1.0
Abstract: Description: Targetted at Grid applications, middleware and network operators alike, the version 1 schemas were NM-WG's first pass at producing XML schemas to facilitate the unified requesting and sharing of network measurement data. The work highlighted some gaps in group thinking, which will be addressed in version 2. It should be noted that versions 1 and 2 are not backwards compatible. This deliverable documents 18-24 months of schema work, providing a historic record of the work and lessons learned. It also demonstrates that the group has been productive, even if the results will not be "brought to market".
Adoption Level: NA
Grid Role: Provide historical record of past work

Seven Questions:
1. Is the scope of the proposed group sufficiently focused?
2. Are the topics that the group plans to address clear and relevant for the Grid research, development, industrial, implementation, and/or application user community?
3. Will the formation of the group foster (consensus-based) work that would not be done otherwise?
4. Do the group's activities overlap inappropriately with those of another OGF group or to a group active in another organization such as IETF or W3C?
5. Are there sufficient interest and expertise in the group's topic, with at least several people willing to expend the effort that is likely to produce significant results over time?
6. Does a base of interested consumers (e.g., application developers, Grid system implementers, industry partners, end-users) appear to exist for the planned work?
7. Does the OGF have a reasonable role to play in the determination of the technology?
Group Status:
Active
