Charter for GFS-WG
Date 2013-05-22
Group Abbreviation:
gfs-wg
Group Name:
Grid File System Working Group
Area:
Data
Group Leadership:
| Arun Jagatheesan | arun@sdsc.edu | Chair |
| Osamu Tatebe | o.tatebe@aist.go.jp | Chair |
| Chris Jordan | ctjordan@sdsc.edu | Secretary |
Group Summary:
GFS-WG works on standard service interface(s) and architecture of a logical file system that can be used in data grid management systems for both inter and intra enterprise grid environments. This group also collaborates with the SNIA ILM and other similar efforts in the industry.
Charter Focus/Purpose and Scope:
Data Grids provide a logical view or organization of unstructured data (and any other digital entity) that can be distributed in multiple adminstrative domains that participate in a Grid. The view provided by the data grid is very similar to that of an hierarchical tree-like organization used in tradiational file systems. Grid File System (GFS) provides this logical hierachical view of data and other digital entities in a data grid. GFS Working Group works on providing standard GFS service interface and architecture that can be used in Data Grids and Data Grid Management Systems.
Goals/Deliverables:
Title: GGF Grid File System Architecture Workbook v1.0
Abstract: This is a working document that describes the design issues and requirements that are being considered while designing the standard architecture for Grid File System (GFS).
Type: Informational Document

Title: Resource Namespace Service - Proposed Final Draft v1.10
Abstract: This document describes the specification of a Resource Namespace Service (RNS), which is a WSRF compliant Web service capable of providing namespace services for any addressable entity by registering an Endpoint Reference or URL with an easily accessible, hierarchically managed, name.

Seven Questions:
1. Is the scope of the proposed group sufficiently focused?
2. Are the topics that the group plans to address clear and relevant for the Grid research, development, industrial, implementation, and/or application user community?
3. Will the formation of the group foster (consensus-based) work that would not be done otherwise?
4. Do the group's activities overlap inappropriately with those of another OGF group or to a group active in another organization such as IETF or W3C?
5. Are there sufficient interest and expertise in the group's topic, with at least several people willing to expend the effort that is likely to produce significant results over time?
6. Does a base of interested consumers (e.g., application developers, Grid system implementers, industry partners, end-users) appear to exist for the planned work?
7. Does the OGF have a reasonable role to play in the determination of the technology?
Group Status:
Active
