Workshop on Pharma, Biotech and Life Science Use of Grids: Enterprise Requirements (90 mins)
Robert Cohen, Peter Maccallum, Rich Sinnot
View Participants

Presented by the Enterprise Grid Requirements (EGR) Working Group, the Enterprise Area of Open Grid Forum, and the EGEE Industry Forum.

This workshop will examine issues that pharmas and other life sciences firms need to address when they operate clusters and Grids. The workshop provides a chance for these firms to understand and discuss these issues in a forum that includes experts on Grids and cluster computing, data management, and storage.

The Open Grid Forum has held two previous workshops with pharmas that have included Johnson & Johnson, BristolMeyersSquibb, Eli Lilly, Schrodinger, Entelos, and caBIG. The earlier workshops suggested a number of generic issues facing pharma users of Grids. We hope this session discusses these and other issues (see the background paper) and will identify a series of best practices.

Co-Hosts: Peter Maccallum, PhD, CancerGrid Project Manager, CRUK Cambridge Research Institute (http://www.cancergrid.org) and Rich Sinnott will be hosts. Robert Cohen, Area Director, Enterprise Requirements, will represent the Open Grid Forum and Sy Holsinger, EGEE Industry Forum.

Takeaways:
1) A better understanding of the generic issues that cluster and Grid users in the pharma, biotech, and life sciences industry believe are the “top level” challenges they face.
2) An opportunity to discuss these challenges with leading experts in the Grid community.
3) Information about how “fellow” pharma, biotech, and life sciences adopters are addressing these challenges and resolving the “problem points” they face.
4) Feedback from Grid experts about how they believe the key pharma, biotech, and life sciences challenges can be ameliorated.
5) Excellent opportunities to raise challenges face-to-face with peers and Grid gurus, including small group discussions and cross-industry sessions.
6) Rare insights from Grid experts, vendors, and other users about future trends in Grid adoption, use of Services Oriented Architectures, Semantic Web, and Web Services.
7) A chance to hear about the best practices in place at end-user firms in pharma, biotech, and life sciences as well as other verticals.

One of the main results of the workshop will be a White Paper on the issues addressed during the discussion.

There will also be a cross-industry requirement discussion in Charter Suite 4 at 6 PM on May 9. This will bring pharma, biotech, and life sciences firms together with Grid users in the auto, aerospace, and financial services industries.

Other programs in the Grid Means Business sessions on May 8 and 9 and in the Open Grid Forum meeting will also address these issues. Please see www.ogf.org.
Agenda:
Peter Maccallum and Rich Sinnott, as well as Steve Litster, Senior Systems Engineer, Novartis Institutes of BioMedical Research, will provide thoughts on issues in the use of Grids in the life sciences and pharmas to start off the workshop.

The workshop will begin with several short presentations on generic issues of interest to pharmas, biotech, and life sciences firms. These presentations will be followed by a roundtable discussion of the key issues that participants want to explore in greater detail. We will provide a more detailed agenda prior to the workshop.
